The Royal Mint launches the Shēngxiào Collection, a series inspired by centuries of tradition, beginning with the Lunar Year of the Horse UK 2014 One Ounce Gold coin. Artist Wuon-Gean Ho’s design for this first coin in a new series features a dynamic horse design that unites Chinese symbols and customs with British heritage.

The Royal Mint’s Lunar Calendar coins lend a unique British angle to an ancient tradition. They are perfect for wishing good fortune and a prosperous year to their recipient, to continue the tradition of gifting that surrounds Lunar New Year or to begin an enchanting new collection. A first from The Royal Mint, these are the very first legal tender Lunar coins struck for the United Kingdom and they begin an auspicious series: The Shēngxiào Collection, named to honour the Chinese zodiac.

Beginning the Shēngxiào Collection are coins struck for the Lunar Year of the Horse. British Chinese artist and printmaker Wuon-Gean Ho has created a dynamic design combining a powerful and impressive horse at the forefront with the famous Uffington Horse, an ancient white horse carved into the chalk hills of Oxfordshire, at its feet. Struck of one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold. -  Source: British Royal Mint website.
