The
one-troy ounce size bullion coins are the standard
of the Western world, and the most cost-efficient
way to buy and hold a readily tradable form of
gold. Since gold prices are quoted worldwide in
units of troy ounces, these 1-ounce forms of gold
are the easiest way to accumulate and compute your
gold wealth.
All
one troy ounce (31.1 grams) gold coins listed
here are of pure 24 karat (.999 to .99999) fine
gold. Two exceptions to this rule are the South
African Krugerrand and the US gold Eagle, which
in addition to a troy ounce of pure gold, contain
alloys (mostly copper in the Krugerrand and silver
in the Eagle), bringing their total weight to
1.09 troy ounces, or 33.9 grams per coin.
We also feature a vintage semi-numismatic coin
from the era of real money - the Liberty head U.S. double eagle $20 gold coin. Each $20 gold
piece contains .9675 oz. of pure gold, with a 10% alloy of copper, bringing its weight to
about 33.43 grams.
