Each of these finely-detailed coins is issued in individual round plastic capsules from the Perth Mint, and since 1987, each year features a different portrait of Australia’s most famous animal.
The Kangaroo is now one of the best buys in bullion coins, since the Perth Mint has sharply discounted its premiums on the 1-ounce gold Kangaroo.

Gold Australian
Kangaroo
Introduced in 1986 as a .9999 fine bullion
coin. Each year the design is changed, since 1989 with various portraits of kangaroos.
The current year Australian Gold Kangaroos that we sell here are in their original protective round
plastic cases, as issued by the Mint.
Australia's Australian Gold Kangaroo Nugget series
of bullion coins was launched in 1987 by Gold Corporation, which is wholly owned by
the government of Western Australia. From its beginning, this issue of coins had two
unique features: a 'two-tone' frosted design effect, and individual hard plastic encapsulation
of each coin. For a standard-price bullion coin, these features were unheard of, and
served to position the Nugget as a product offering a lot of value for a standard bullion
price. At first, these coins pictured on the reverse side a famous Australian gold
nugget.
Well, maybe pictures of gold nuggets
are recognizable in Australia, like pictures of baseball players here in America. But
to most of us, the gold Nuggets from 1986-1988 pictured lumps that looked like meteorites,
or maybe just clods of dirt.
Thankfully, in 1989, this design was
changed to feature different Kangaroos, a more world-recognized symbol of Australia.
Another aspect of the bullion coin market
touched on by Australia was the introduction of 2-, 10-, and 32.15-ounce (kilogram)
bullion gold coins. These larger sizes have been imported into the U.S. from time to
time since their initial production. The large sizes are also produced in silver and
platinum versions. The Australian Gold Kangaroos are meticulously-made, individually packaged
99.99% pure coins with a lot of 'eye-appeal' for the bullion buyer.
The one-ounce gold Kangaroo from Australia
is an ounce of .9999 pure gold, with a nominal face value of $100 Australian. Each coin
comes in a hard plastic case, shipped from the Perth Mint shrink-wrapped 20 coins together.
Diameter is 32.1 mm, with a thickness of 2.8 mm.
The half-ounce gold Kangaroo is .50 ounce
of .9999 pure gold, with a face value of A$50. Each coin is individually packed in a
round plastic capsule, and shrink-wrapped together in groups of 20 coins at the Perth
Mint. Diameter is 25.1mm, thickness 2.4mm.
The quarter-ounce gold Kangaroo is .25
ounce of .9999 pure gold, with a face value of A$25. Each coin is shipped from the Perth
Mint in a round plastic case, and shrink-wrapped 20 coins together. Diameter is 20.1
mm, thickness 2 mm.
The tenth-ounce gold Kangaroo is .1 ounce
of .9999 pure gold, with a face value of A$15. Individually encapsulated, 20 coins are
shrink-wrapped together for shipment from the Perth Mint. Diameter is 16.1mm, thickness
is 1.5 mm.
The twentieth-ounce gold Kangaroo is .05
ounce of .9999 pure gold, with a face value of A$5. Individually encapsulated, 20 coins
are shrink-wrapped together at the Perth Mint. Diameter is 14.1 mm, thickness is 1.4mm.
